Ute Finance for Business and Tradies
By Mary Nebotakis, Managing Director, Natloans, B. Eco, Dip. Financial Services
Ute Finance for Business: A Practical Guide for Tradies and Business Owners
For many tradespeople and business owners, a ute is one of their most important working assets. It carries tools, transports materials and helps keep jobs moving from one day to the next.
Whether you are replacing a tired workhorse or buying a vehicle for a new team member, ute finance for business should start with the complete purchase and a realistic repayment budget.
Here is what to consider before committing to your next work ute.
Budget for the ute you actually need
The advertised price may only be part of the cost of getting a ute ready for work. You might also need a tray, canopy, toolboxes, shelving, roof racks or other equipment.
Give your broker an itemised quote covering the vehicle and proposed accessories. This allows them to ask which costs the lender may consider financing, what documentation is needed and whether any items need to be paid separately.
Do not assume that every modification can be included in the loan. The lender’s assessment may depend on the vehicle, the equipment, the supplier and how the purchase is documented.
Should you buy a new or used work ute?
A new ute may offer the specification and warranty you want. A used ute may lower the initial purchase price, but its condition, mileage and likely maintenance needs deserve close attention.
For finance, lenders may also consider the vehicle’s age now and at the end of the proposed loan. An older ute may have different available terms from a new one.
Compare the likely cost of ownership as well as the repayments. Fuel, servicing, insurance and downtime can make a meaningful difference to your business budget. A lower purchase price is only useful if the vehicle can reliably do the work you need.
Can you finance a ute with an ABN?
An ABN is part of your business information, but it is not an automatic approval. Lenders may assess factors such as trading history, income or turnover, existing debts, credit history and intended vehicle use.
Some lenders may offer low-doc pathways for eligible applicants. Low-doc means a different documentation process; it does not mean that the lender skips its assessment or that every business qualifies.
If you are newly self-employed or your latest financials are not ready, explain your situation to your broker early. They can identify what evidence may be needed and whether there are suitable options to investigate.
Match repayments to the way your business operates
Work out what you can comfortably commit to after allowing for normal operating expenses and quieter periods. Include the ute’s running costs rather than treating the loan repayment as the entire monthly cost.
Ask your broker to compare the deposit, term, fees and any proposed balloon payment. A balloon needs a clear plan for the final amount, particularly if the ute will cover high kilometres or receive heavy use. Its future value may be lower than you expect.
Check business and personal use with your accountant
A work ute may also be used privately. The vehicle’s specifications, ownership and actual use can affect its tax treatment.
Do not assume that every ute receives the same treatment or that the entire purchase is immediately deductible. Ask your accountant about the rules relevant to your vehicle and business before buying.
How Natloans can help with business ute finance
Natloans’ asset finance brokers can help you explore finance for a work ute, explain lender requirements and guide the application through to settlement, subject to approval.
Start with the vehicle quote, your business details and a clear picture of how the ute will be used. If you are still choosing between vehicles, an early finance conversation can help you understand the next steps before you commit.
